CIS: 1st in the Gulf South Using Innovative Below-the-Knee Treatment

Patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia often have blockages in the tibial arteries below the knee, but balloon angioplasty (the traditional standard of care) has mixed short- and long-term results. At Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS), patients with peripheral artery disease have access to an innovative FDA-approved dissolvable stent that transforms the treatment of this late-stage condition.

CIS was the first in the Gulf South to use the Esprit™ BTK (Below the Knee) Everolimus Eluting Resorbable Scaffold System in a procedure that Dr. Pradeep Nair performed on May 16, 2024, at Terrebonne General Health System in Houma, Louisiana. A renowned interventional cardiologist at CIS, Dr. Nair implanted this first-of-its-kind dissolvable stent, designed to keep arteries open while delivering Everolimus to help restore vessels and protect against blockage.

Not only did Dr. Nair perform the procedure using this cardiology innovation; he participated in the clinical trial, helping this groundbreaking device achieve FDA approval. He describes it as a prime example of what he perceives to be the future of peripheral intervention: a “leave nothing behind” approach that leverages the best innovations in the cardiovascular market to transform patient care.

FCCI: Using Remote Monitoring for a Better Patient Experience

During the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, telehealth and virtual health services soared, ensuring that patients had access to the healthcare services they needed. The evolution to tech-enabled patient care continues at First Coast Cardiovascular Institute (FCCI), where physicians are deploying Remote Physiologic Monitoring (RPM) services from IronRod Health for more effective, convenient, and timely management of cardiovascular health.

RPM enables FCCI physicians to collect patient health data digitally and remotely for greater convenience, then receive the data electronically and securely. In turn, they gain the information to keep up-to-date on the patient’s health and their adherence to the treatment plan for better care continuity.
